Steve is Managing Partner of CoastEdge Partners, where he is focused on building an institutional-quality investment platform designed around the needs of ultra-high-net-worth families. His goal is to bring the rigor, resources, and investment capabilities of a sophisticated institution to clients while preserving the highly personal approach and alignment that define CoastEdge.
Together with Rich Effress, Steve leads the firm’s strategy and continued evolution, working closely with the CoastEdge team across investments, client service, talent, and growth. He is particularly focused on strengthening the firm’s capabilities and ensuring that CoastEdge continues to evolve alongside the increasingly complex needs of its clients.
Steve has worked in financial services for more than 30 years. Prior to CoastEdge, he co-founded and served as President and Managing Partner of Gurtin Municipal Bond Management, a $14 billion investment management firm that was acquired by PIMCO in 2019. Earlier in his career, Steve worked at Morgan Stanley in Chicago and California, focusing on fixed-income portfolio management, and at Accenture, where he advised Fortune 500 financial services firms.
Steve is the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and currently serves as Vice Chairman. He is also a past Chapter Chairman of Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) San Diego. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas, where he served as class president, and an MBA in Finance and Strategy from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
Outside of work, Steve is an avid runner and enjoys spending time with his wife, Lauren, and their three sons. He can often be found near the water supporting his sons in sailing, where they compete at the national and international levels, or on the sidelines of lacrosse fields across the country. He also enjoys traveling with his family and staying active in the San Diego community.
